Welcome to Arrest Stories. An Arizona inmate pulled off an elaborate scheme using fake court documents to walk free from prison months before his sentence was complete, fooling both corrections officials and the court system. Here's what may have happened.
David Cramer orchestrated what authorities are calling a complex fraud involving falsified legal paperwork that secured his early release from an Arizona correctional facility. The scheme unraveled on August twentieth when Cramer was finally apprehended after spending more than two months as a free man.
The elaborate plot began in May when Cramer filed paperwork with the court system containing what investigators discovered was a superimposed court seal. Officials revealed that Cramer submitted fraudulent documents to both the court system and the Department of Corrections, creating confusion that worked in his favor.
A corrections spokesperson explained the complexity of the situation, stating, "Inmate Cramer, through the court system – to us, it's a very complex situation – but submitted fraudulent court paperwork through the court system, but also through the department as well."
The centerpiece of Cramer's deception was a fake document titled "Memorandum Decision" allegedly created by Black Canyon Enterprises PLLC. According to officials, this fraudulent paperwork "claims that the Presiding Judge is ordering that sentences by vacated."
Initially, the falsified documents appeared legitimate to prison officials. "That documentation appeared valid during the initial review, but has since been determined to be falsified," authorities confirmed.
The timeline reveals how the scheme developed over several months. On June third, a legitimate request to vacate Cramer's sentences was properly denied through official channels. Twenty days later, on June twenty-third, another document was deemed fictitious by authorities, yet Cramer had already gained his freedom.
The Department of Corrections discovered the error more than two months after Cramer's release, leading to his arrest on August twentieth. By August twenty-first, Cramer was placed in the Browning Unit maximum security facility.
